The conversations we have

I hung out with some writer friends on Thursday and we walked around, ate food, and had those conversations that you can only have with other writers. The kind of conversations I don't need all the time but that are a relief to have now and then. We talked about writing and how it's hard and full of doubts, sadness, glory, and hope. We talked about our genre(s) and who was doing well and our theories on why, and who was tanking and why that might be as well. Both these friends are more knowledgeable about such things than me so that was great. It's so important, I think, to have some people some of the time understand how weird the writing life is.

A few days before that, I hung out with my (secret) agent woman wherein we ate the world's most creamy yoghurt and blueberries. That was all about specific conversations too: the kind that only make sense between a client and an agent. We talked some about pitching, marketing, future projects, and the publishing world about which I know some but not enough. It was lovely to meet her in person and discover little things like we have similar parenting philosophies and discover bigger things like she seems like the same person in person as on the phone and this is an excellent thing. There's a part of me that still can't quite believe I have an agent who is passionate about my writing and who I can imagine being with for the long haul.

Oh, and I feel like I'm being weirdly coy so should just go ahead and name names: the illustrious writers were Laurel Amberdine and Cassie Alexander, and the astounding agent is Linda Epstein.

I loved meeting you and the baby Sparrow in person, Katie! I don't think I did anything quite astounding, but the yogurt was definitely delish. Yes, I am the same in person as on the phone (and on my blog, I think). And get used to the idea that I'm passionate about your writing, because I'm in it with you for the long haul.
